Brianne’s Guest Post on 23andMe Blog Highlights the Aspects of DNA Testing That Fill in Gaps for Adoptees

Watershed DNA’s founder Brianne Kirkpatrick was invited to share on the blog of 23andMe about how DNA testing helps adoptees learn information. The post is a small excerpt of what is covered in The DNA Guide for Adoptees, available for purchase online on Amazon and other online retailer sites where books are found.

DNA tests come in many varieties and sizes. 23andMe’s test comes in three versions, and beyond that you can find other tests that might tell you things 23andMe’s genotype analysis does not. Brianne summarizes the options testers at 23andMe can expect and gives advice on connecting with a genetic counselor, especially if making decisions about purchasing a kit for another person, such as a minor child who is adopted.

It takes time and patience and realistic expectations to navigate these tricky waters.

Discoveries that answer questions for one set of people (adoptees, for example) can often open the door to new questions for others (the DNA relatives they connect to or make contact with). Family members who are contacted by a newfound DNA child are not always ready or prepared for what comes next, especially if they weren’t aware of a biological child’s existence.

It takes time and patience and realistic expectations to navigate these tricky waters. If you’re an adoptee preparing to reach out or start a search with DNA testing, read posts like this one first. Understanding the experience from the other side, and working with a knowledgeable therapist, and surrounding yourself with support are critical to the journey. If you are a person surprised by your DNA test matches or someone close to you, you can learn more about Navigating Unexpected Relationships from this page on the 23andMe blog.
